Recently, a group of scientists developed and tested a model involving traumatic brain injury in zebrafish, which could have positive implications for humans with similar injuries. The model made it possible to simulate traumatic brain injuries and identify molecular targets, which are promising for the treatment of neurotraumas and their consequences. This study could lead to preclinical testing of new medications on zebrafish, as well.
The New Model Used for the Study
The most common traumatic brain injury model in studies involving small animals like rodents and zebrafish often involves penetrating damage to the tissue of the brain. In the model used in this study, however, scientists were able to examine the fish in a manner that was safe for them. Because both the skull and surrounding skin of zebrafish are transparent, scientists were able to examine the brain in a non-invasive manner. The method scientists used instead of penetrating damage involved irritating the fish’s brain with a system equipped with a specific guidance system.
The Outcome of the Study
Scientists found that two days after the surgery, the irradiated fish moved in a much less active manner; the fish traveled more slowly and covered a shorter distance. The fish also froze in place for long durations, which suggested a substantial disturbance in the fish’s normal behavior. The fact that the fish’s reactions accurately mirrored the behavior of mammals and humans with traumatic brain injuries suggested the model’s reliability.
Similarly, after studying molecular biomarkers and neuron recovery, scientists became convinced that, in contrast to other mammals, zebrafish can reach full brain function restoration as soon as a week following a neurological injury. The fish are of substantial interest for locating and examining neurodegeneration mechanisms. The fish are also valuable for preclinical testing of certain types of drugs.
How These Studies Could Help Humans
The studies and their results are of substantial value in treating people who have traumatic brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries and other types of neurotrauma impact approximately 60 million individuals throughout the world annually. These injuries routinely lead to extended hospitalization, disability, and death.
The most common cause of traumatic brain injuries include falls, shocks, blows, and penetrating damage. In addition to car accidents, these injuries are also commonly the result of sports accidents.
Traumatic brain injuries can predispose people to other severe neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. At the same, concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries are the most common kind of neurotrauma and require further study at the molecular as well as cellular and behavioral levels.
