Pickup Truck Strikes, Kills Person Standing Near Vehicle After a Crash in Kansas City

On July 31st, 2024, the Kansas City Star reported that one person was killed after being struck on a highway in the city. A preliminary investigation indicates that a driver exited their vehicle after a collision and was then subsequently—and tragically—hit by a pickup truck on Missouri Highway 210. The incident is still under a more detailed police investigation. Here, our Kansas City auto accident lawyer provides an overview of what we know so far, emphasizes the importance of getting to safety after a collision, and explains the rights grieving families have after a fatal crash.

Driver Killed While Outside Vehicle on Missouri Highway 210 in Kansas City

A spokesperson from the Kansas City Police Department confirmed that a driver who exited their vehicle following a relatively minor collision was subsequently fatally struck by an oncoming Chevy pickup truck. The crash happened shortly before sunrise on the morning of July 31st in Kansas City. Based on an early investigation, officers believe that the driver of the pickup truck failed to notice the stopped vehicle’s flashing lights in time and struck the driver who was standing next to it.

Your Health and Safety Always Take the Top Priority After a Motor Vehicle Crash

In both Missouri and Kansas, car accident victims have a duty to stop their vehicle, exchange information, and remain at the scene of a collision. With that being said, your health and safety are always a top priority. If you need immediate emergency medical services, you can and should accept a ride to the nearest hospital. You do not have to stay at the scene of the crash. Along the same lines, you should always take extra care to get yourself to a safe spot after a collision—especially if it is dark out or visibility is otherwise reduced. Call the police and allow them to control the scene.

Grieving Families are Entitled to Justice (an Overview of Wrongful Deaths Laws)

The loss of a family member to any type of traffic accident is devastating. Nothing could ever truly be enough to set things right after such a terrible collision. Given the seriousness of the situation, it is imperative that families are able to get justice and accountability. A wrongful death claim is a civil cause of action that allows eligible family members and dependents to pursue a claim for compensation against the at-fault party and their insurance company. Wrongful death cases are governed at the state level. There are some small but nonetheless important differences between the wrongful death claims process in Missouri and Kansas.
