Three People Hurt in Pile-Up Crash in Kansas City After Tire Falls Off Jeep

On May 22, 2024, the Kansas City Star reported that three people were injured in a pile-up accident when a tire suddenly came off of a jeep. The incident is still under a more comprehensive investigation by law enforcement. Here, our Kansas City motor vehicle accident lawyer explains what we know about the crash and highlights the risk of tire defects.

The Crash: Back Left Tire Came Loose, Vehicle Swerved Across Traffic

As reported by the Kansas City Star, three people were critically injured in a three-car pile-up crash. The accident happened on 23rd Street when the left rear tire and left rear rim suddenly came loose from a Jeep Wrangler. That vehicle swerved across the center line and struck two other cars (a Subaru and a Nissan) that were traveling in the opposite direction. All three victims were listed in stable condition at an area hospital. The crash is still being investigated by the Kansas City Police Department.

Tire Safety is Extremely Important

Tires are the only part of a motor vehicle that actually makes contact with the road. With this in mind, tire safety is essential. Ensuring tires are properly inflated, regularly inspected for wear and tear, and replaced when necessary helps prevent accidents and improves vehicle handling. Neglecting tire maintenance can lead to terrible accidents.

Who Bears Liability for a Crash Caused By a Tire Problem?

Hurt in a crash caused by a tire problem in Kansas City? You have the right to seek compensation for your damages, including vehicle repairs, medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Who can be held responsible for this type of crash? It could be one or more of the following:

  • Motorist: All motorists are responsible for regular vehicle maintenance—including ensuring that tires are in good condition and properly inflated. If a crash occurs because a motorist neglected these duties, he or she could be held liable.
  • Tire Shop: The tire shop’s liability hinges on the quality of service provided during the installation/maintenance of tires. If the shop improperly installed a tire or failed to notice and inform the customer of a problem during routine service, it could be held liable.
  • Manufacturer: A manufacturer may be liable if the tire failure was due to a defect in the product. If a defective tire leads to a crash, the manufacturer could be responsible under product liability law. These are strict liability cases in Missouri and Kansas.
